The practice of DesignOps has emerged in recent years at IBM and across the design industry as a way to meet this need. Karen is a Design lead for strategy and operations across multiple projects to deliver not only quality designs but identify opportunities to innovate and improve user experiences. She is focused on supporting the ability for designers to create and iterate to improve their creations. Additionally, she defines processes for demonstrating the value these designs have across the organization. Karen connects design with product and development to ensure there is cross-organizational communication, collaboration, and shared understanding of design value through design operations.

The future of application delivery starts with modernization
Kristine is a Design advocate, change agent and leader who is passionate about helping hardware and software teams enjoy their work, and deliver outcomes that delight users and clients. She has 19 years of experience in design thinking and agile transformation, program management, instructional design, metrics, facilitation, coaching, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Day one of my IBM career started with sixty or so dewy designers coming from all over the country — landing in Austin, Texas, which would become the flagship location for the renewed IBM design program. I was joining IBM, but I knew what I was really joining was a movement to spread the value of a human-centered approach in order to solve for some of the most complex problems in the world. And just to name a few, we’re talking about solutions like improving diabetic care with AI, proactively managing data security threats, and making our world go ‘round with powerful transaction systems capable of running more than 12 billion encrypted transactions per day. Underlying this, the mission to “create a sustainable culture of design” was the song and beat of our drums.
His role is rooted within the field of visual design, concept and research whilst co-creating the German speaking IBM DesignOps community. Currently he leads the Visual Design Team in Hamburg and the UI design of IBM’s electronic health and patient record for the German health care system. IBM Cloud helps in reducing the time that it takes to design the solutions that meet all of the compliance controls and regulations for your industry. The IBM Cloud Framework for Financial Services offers a set of reference architectures that can be used as a starting point for meeting the security and regulatory requirements outlined in the framework. These reference architectures provide a solid foundation for deploying secure, compliant applications within the framework. Additionally, IBM Cloud offers preconfigured VPC landing zone deployable architectures, which are built using infrastructure as code (IaC) assets based on the IBM Cloud for Financial Services reference architecture.

On behalf of the IBM Design Leadership Board and as its chair, it is my honor and privilege to announce our newly appointed 2021 IBM Design Principals. These professionals are exemplars of design practice, craft, and leadership, and they are an integral part of IBM’s industry-standard design program. It’s important for a DesignOps leader to partner with Business Ops, Finance, HR, Program/Offering Management, Executives and other stakeholders.
We were given a Hill that prompted us to create a way to increase adoption of accessibility in design at IBM. The Loop is a great representation of how working in an Agile team through iterative cycles can help teams achieve the best outcomes by gathering feedback from real users and improving upon each iteration. This was the first thought that came to mind when I found out that I would be flying down to Austin, Texas this summer. I had been invited to attend Patterns, IBM’s six-week Design Education Program for early-career designers. Following my internship last summer, I have returned full-time to IBM as a User Experience designer. I had no clue what to expect from this training program, formerly known as “Bootcamp”.

At the heart of the design culture at IBM is Enterprise Design Thinking (EDT), a framework that scales design thinking across teams of all sizes and geographies. These workshops equipped us with the necessary tools to progress through our incubator project, which I will go into more detail later on. Overall, deployable architecture aims to make it easier for organizations to achieve faster, more reliable deployments, while also making sure that the underlying infrastructure is scalable and resilient. As much as we would like to achieve perfection, nothing will ever be perfect. But we can commit to an idea, knowing that with each iteration, we can get a little closer to meeting our users’ continuously evolving needs.
From our As-Is Scenario Map of the product life cycle, we identified a gap between design and development during the design handoff. Development wasn’t receiving proper requirements for accessibility (such as proper tab order, detailed image alt text, focus state specifications, etc.) with the designs. Interactivity is an essential feature that turns your visualization into a tool to foster data exploration and improve user understanding by creating recognition, shortening the learning curve. A visualization reaches its maximum value when it allows users to find their own exploration path. We work with partners — both internal (HR, L&K, Excellence, Crowd Sift, etc). We also have our iX Brand — iXponential, a platform for knowledge sharing, continuous learning, and celebrating people. In this new era of working remotely, this platform has really made a huge difference for designers in terms of engagement.
The following set of best practices and applications are helpful to isolate the different design aspects and to properly address them. It’s been exhilarating to help usher in a new design language and ethos for IBM. With this foundation, we’re building stronger bridges and elevating our design practices internally while also creating more unified brand experiences in the world—bringing that distinct ‘IBMness’ to everything we do. In the first week, we jumped right into learning sessions on topics ranging from Carbon (IBM’s design system) to career talks given by senior designers on various topics including discipline growth, soft skills, and IBM as a business. Our IBMers are growth minded, always staying curious, open to feedback and learning new information and skills to constantly transform themselves and our company. They are trusted to provide on-going feedback to help other IBMers grow, as well as collaborate with colleagues keeping in mind a team focused approach to include different perspectives to drive exceptional outcomes for our customers.
Charles and Ray Eames pioneered a deeply human approach to design which, although evident in all of their work, was particularly powerful in their IBM projects. Their clear communication of technology's role in society, through myriad IBM-sponsored exhibitions, short films and books, became the reference for a new form of corporate design and citizenship. Their work presents a finely integrated model that is as relevant today as it was 70 years ago. With this cohort, we see the continued expansion of our community of design leaders across the IBM company and around the globe.
That was six years ago, and although it hasn’t all been a rosy journey, I am certain of IBM’s commitment to building a sustainable culture of design. There are so many people here who are actively working to improve our teams, solutions, and client experiences alongside internal efforts like the playbook. I see a deep sense of responsibility in the design community to steward design thinking and the design practice in a way that will benefit the larger opportunity to provide our world with better solutions and outcomes. A dedicated DesignOps role provides for differentiated ROI correlating directly to the business needs and design team outcomes. We talk a lot about products, services, and outcomes, but let’s not forget that the people are the ones behind them all.
